Activities

The Grand Haven port community is an active beach resort with boating, fishing, sailing, biking, skating etc. along with connecting campgrounds and recreational areas. The city has over 100 miles of bike trails, a state beach, boardwalk, two lighthouses and a pier

Sunbathing

The beaches of Grand Haven have been nationally and internationally recognized and the accolades too numerous to list here. Since we are bragging, Grand Haven was recently named the Happiest Seaside Town in America by Coastal Living Magazine and Travel +Leisure recognized Grand Haven Area among the “Best Secret Beaches on Earth”. One feature making Grand Haven beaches so exceptionally is the “sugar sand” found only here in Grand Haven. Add fresh water to the mix and it puts Grand Haven beaches over the top.

Surfing

Skim board, boogie board, surf board, paddle board, skate board, scooter and kite board are all acceptable modes of transportation in Grand Haven. No wonder they call us “Little California”. Spend a week at the beach and enjoy every one of the many land and water sports Grand Haven has to offer. Serendipity Resort is just ¾ of a mile from the beach and just next door to Grand Haven’s quaint downtown shops and restaurants.

Scuba Diving

Interested in viewing the Grand Haven Area waters from the underside? How about scuba diving! Start off in the pool or jump into the lake and train to be open water certified. Consider the West Michigan Underwater Preserve or Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates. There are numerous shipwrecks and underwater features including clay walls, waiting for you.

Kiteboarding

Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding is an adventure surface water sport that has been described as combining wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. Kiteboarding harnesses the power of the wind to propel a rider across the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard – similar to a wakeboard. Imagine being able to pull off all your favorite wakeboard moves all with one large kite and no boat. Ride for hours at a time with only the sound of the wind at your ears and no stopping to get on a lift or get on a boat.

Boating

On calm, comfortable days, the Grand Haven area is a boater’s paradise. View or participate in the parade of watercraft traveling the channel that cuts through downtown. Drift in quaint, quiet bayous. Hop aboard a chartered schooner, and sail the waves of Lake Michigan at sunset. Or launch your own powerboat, personal watercraft or daysailer inland at Spring Lake, and enjoy the views of waterfront living.

Biking

With more than 100 miles of bike paths crisscrossing the Grand Haven Area, cyclists of all skill levels can find trails to their liking. Many offer refreshing views of beachfront parks and city streets. Some wind around lakes, rivers, dunes or wilderness. Others are a true test of endurance with two-, three- and four-mile loops and distances ranging from 25 to 100 miles.

Hiking

Hikers will enjoy the many trails our area has to offer, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the rolling woodlands of West Michigan. You can hike the lakeshore trail that connects Grand Haven and Holland with a stop along the way at beautiful Kirk Park or Olive Shores. If the woods and nature are more style, try Pigeon Creek or Rosy Mound. Both are Ottawa County parks located in West Olive and offer more than the 300-acres for exploration.

Golfing

In the Grand Haven Area, 25 public and private courses welcome golfers of varied skill levels from early spring through late fall. All provide breathtaking scenery, peaceful moments, challenging fairways and manicured greens. Expect reasonable rates and greens fees along with all the traditional amenities — practice ranges, pro shops and dining.

Fishing

Coho and chinook salmon, steelhead, lake trout, bass, bluegill, perch and walleye abound in the varied waters surrounding the Grand Haven Area. Have a charter captain navigate Lake Michigan in early fall in search of that prized salmon or steelie. Travel inland to Spring Lake with friends, and cast a line from the shore in search of that elusive bass. Or go it alone and try to hook that trophy catch. Many anglers get lucky from the pier at Grand Haven State Park.
